How to... Measure for Curtains and Blinds

Next up in our 'how to' series is how to accurately measure for curtains and roman blinds.

Measuring for curtains:

Step one - First measure the width of your window frame. Then measure from the top of your window down to the floor. (Are you having new carpet fitted or a wooden floor installed? Bare this in mind when you measure, a new carpet and underlay or change of flooring type can impact your curtain drop.)

Step two - When measuring for curtains we always allow 15cm to 20cm (6" - 8") either side of the window frame to accommodate your curtain when it is stacked back. So if you don't already have a curtain pole in place add 30 - 40cm on to the width of your window frame. For example if your window frame measures 160cm your curtain pole would need to be 190cm - 200cm. If you already have a curtain pole in place be sure to check this extends enough past the window frame on each side. Please note this measurement should not include the finials. A curtain pole should be positioned at roughly 10cm - 15cm above the window frame and should sit around halfway between the window frame and ceiling or coving. You want to ensure the curtain pole is lifted enough to hide the back of the heading style from outside the window. Then add this figure to the measurement from the top of the window frame to the floor. This will give you your curtain drop.

Measuring for roman blinds:

Roman blinds can be fixed either inside the window recess or outside the window recess and this decision will impact the measurements you need. Roman blinds that are fixed on the outside of the window can be installed above the top of the window frame which can be great if you have a smaller window and don't want to lose any light. Once you have decided on where to place the blind, see below for how to measure.

Inside the window recess - Measure in three places, (top, middle and bottom) the width from left to right and again in three places, (left, middle and right) the height from top to bottom. The smallest measurement will be used for making up. Next take the measurement from the floor to the top of the window frame. This measurement will be needed to ensure the operating chain complies with child safety regulations.

Outside the window recess - As above, measure in three places (top, middle and bottom) the width from left to right and again in three places, (left, middle and right) the drop from top to bottom. Then we would always add 10cm to the width of the window frame, to allow the blind to cover 5cm of the wall on either side of the window. You can use the windowsill as a guide, this usually measures around 10cm more than the window. You can place the blind 10cm or 15cm above the window recess although be sure not to push this too high as you will see in to the back of the frame. You also need to decide whether you would like the blind to extend below the windowsill when the blind is down or whether you would like it to sit on the sill. If choosing the first of the two options, you will want to add another 5cm - 10cm to the drop to accommodate this. Next take the measurement from the floor to the top of the window frame. This measurement will be needed to ensure the operating chain complies with child safety regulations.
